How to Find the Cheapest International Shipping (Live Breakpoint Guide)

The 30-second answer

Finding the cheapest international rate isn't about picking one favorite carrier — it's about knowing where each carrier wins. The pattern from our live data:

  1. Under 4 lb to most countries: USPS First Class Package International Service (FCPI) is almost always the cheapest sticker price. The trade-off is reduced tracking once the package crosses the border.
  2. 5+ lb to most countries: A UPS service (Standard, Expedited, or Worldwide Expedited depending on region) typically takes over.
  3. Canada, all weights: UPS Standard wins from 1 lb up. USPS isn't competitive on this route.

The actionable takeaway: weigh your shipment first, then look up the cheapest carrier for that weight × destination. Don't pick a carrier brand and stick with it across all shipments.

Each row below is a destination. The transitions show the weight bands where one carrier stops being cheapest and another takes over. If a destination has no transitions, the same carrier wins at every weight in our dataset.

The actual process for finding the cheapest rate

  1. Sign up for shipping software with multi-carrier access. We recommend ShipStation for businesses (broadest UPS + USPS + GlobalPost coverage internationally) or Stamps.com with code MAIL100 if you're also shipping domestically. Easyship is the strongest choice if DHL Express to Asia/Europe is your primary use case.
  2. Enter your exact shipment — origin zip, destination city, box dimensions, weight. Don't trust generic "Priority Mail International starts at $X" articles — those numbers are stale within months. Use the live calculator on our home page or the comparison view in your shipping software.
  3. Compare ALL the rates, not just one carrier. The table above shows the cheapest, but if you need faster delivery, click into our full breakdown to see every carrier rate per destination.
  4. Don't pay retail. A USPS Priority Mail International parcel bought at the post office counter often costs 30–50% more than the same parcel bought through Stamps.com or ShipStation. The discounted commercial rates above are what shipping software gives you automatically.

Methodology

This guide queries our international-rates Supabase table, which is refreshed monthly via Netlify cron calling Shippo's discounted commercial rate API. Sample shipment: 12"×9"×6" box from NY 10001 to six destinations × four weights (1, 2, 5, 10 lb). For your specific shipment use the interactive calculator. For a destination-by-destination breakdown of every carrier rate (not just cheapest), see our companion guide.
